3 Musketeer Bars - Mini's of course

I haven't been in the kitchen for six days and these have been on my list for awhile - glad I finally made them. Three ingredients! You can't beat that, huh? Very easy and their taste was super close to the real thing.
2 c semi sweet choc chips
1 (8oz) tub of Cool Whip (thawed but not melted)
2 c choc  candy coating wafer melts - not Choc Bark (I got mine at Michaels but I know Hobby Lobby sells them also)
Line a 8" square pan with wax paper. In medium bowl, melt choc chips in microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds. Stir and return to microwave  for 30 more seconds at 50% power. If chocolate is still not melted completely - continue heating it at 10 second intervals at 50% until smooth. Let it cool a bit so you don't melt everything into a sludge.
Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat your melted chocolate for 30 seconds. Add the Cool Whip to melted chocolate and beat just until combined and fluffy -30-60 seconds. Spread evenly into prepared 8x8' pan. Place in freezer for about 30 minutes (overnight might even be better). Remove from freezer, remove candy from pan and cut into squares. Return back to freezer. I worked in small doses so I could keep them hard and easier to work with.
Melt candy wafers in microwave following package directions. Take out frozen squares and dip into melted chocolate. Place on baking tray lined with wax paper. Allow chocolate to set up in refrigerator or freezer. Store in airtight container in refrigerator or freezer. An added bonus - they are Glutten free!

They may be gluten free, but they certainly don't look "glutten" free! Awesome recipe. Can't wait to try this out.

There must be a catch. Hotter chocolate or room temp coolwhip. This didn't work for me. Filling not smooth. Very disappointed

In Australia what would we use as an alternative to Cool Whip, or what is it? They look delicious!
Mickey said…
Anonymous - Sorry you ran into problems but I've never had any issues when making these.
When mixing chocolate with Cool Whip, just make sure your Cool Whip is not frozen and let melted chocolate cool just a touch so it doesn't turn everything into liquid :) hope that helps.

Sorry... didn't work for me. Took hours to harden in the freezer and they basically just taste like melted chocolate wrapped with hard chocolate. So far everyone who posted said they were going to try them (only one said they did and it didn't go well), so wondering if anyone else had success with these? Would love to make these work! :)

Could you email me the cool whip recipe as well? Pretty please?
Thanks,

Made this last night and they turned out pretty great!! Followed the instructions exactly and used my stand mixer. My cool whip was cold when it went in, and I beat some of the heat out of the chocolate before I put it in. I bought the wrong chocolate for the shell (I bought a tray of microwavable chunks from the grocery store, didn't want to drive far to get wafers from Hobby Lobby), and it started to harden before I was halfway with dunking the middles. Taste JUST like the candy bar though! Don't look as neat as in the photo though! lol Wish they did!!

Oh, shoot-- I wanted to try this out but accidentally bought chocolate bark instead of the other stuff. What's the difference?
Mickey said…
Suzi,
I used Wafer Melts but I've seen others use choc bark too with the same results. I think they are the same, its just easier to measure out the melts for me. I hope you make them.

I made these and didn't care for them. It was a fun idea, but it just tasted like chocolate over chocolate..not really like 3 Musketeers.

Hi, your recipe looks very good and I definitely want to try it. But as I'm not a native english-speaker, I ran into some problems while trying to recognize the ingredients you've used. Could you, or anyone here, describe it to me a little bit, so that I can visualize what it is? Or just how to make it, or where to buy it(in Europe!)? In this case, online translators just don't work! :(
hope you've understood my English,
thanks for the time spent with helping me

I just made these and they are yummy, but I will be using milk chocolate next time for the center. My family really didn't like the bitterness of the semisweet chocolate.

Thanks for the recipe!

To make this even easier just buy chocolate cool-whip. Or you could always try cool-whip and mint extract for mint musketeers. :)

I think these would be good with malt powder and milk chocolate for the filling and a good dark chocolate to cover.

LOL Ugly but Delicious! So the only problem I ran into was the coolwhip mixture melted faster than I could cut them! HAHAHA
So I started making bars instead of squares! Lets just say it looked like poo but tasted like heaven! LOL

Thank you that was fun!

I think this would work a whole lot better if you used marshmellow cream instead of cool whip and or use both marshmellow cream & cool whip you need the marshmellow cream to add texture and more flavor. Happy baking

This is from Wikipedia

The candy is made of a nougat filling covered with milk chocolate. The nougat chocolate center is first formed into very large slabs, which are cut to size, and after the centers are formed they are coated with milk chocolate through a process called "enrobing" wherein the centers pass through a continuous flowing vertical "sheet" of chocolate while, at the same time, a rotating chocolate covered wheel beneath the mesh belt coats the base of the bar. The bar is then cooled and prepared for wrapping.

The nougat chocolate center is made by whipping egg whites until they are light and frothy. Sugar syrup is then added, stabilizing the foam and creating "frappé." Other flavoring ingredients are then added to the frappe to create specific flavors

I love that this recipe is only 3 ingredients but I don't see how it would taste like the actual candy bar.

i wonder if you tried marshmallow fluff instead of cool whip if it would be better.
Megan said…
I made these and they are very tasty, however they look sloppier than your pretty, perfectly square ones. But ok for my first try I guess since they taste good!

I have tried 4 batches so far... they are horrible as 3 Musketeer bars! I have followed the recipe to the "T" and nothing like yours. The second time I redid what you said and it was just as bad as the first... it was really dark and too thick to be creamy. The third time I used half semi-sweet and half white chocolate chips... still thick. The last time I doubled the Cool Whip and it still came out wrong. I guess with all these "mistakes" I will make something else with them. They aren't great for 3 Musketeer bars, but they would make a decent truffle type of candy. Maybe a video would help??? I would also like to see how you got yours to look like something that came out of a wrapper instead of a pile of poo.

I keep seeing these people from Australia saying they've never heard of Cool Whip! I actually considered a move to Australia but if they don't have Cool Whip, that will have to be a NO! LOL. There has to be another name for it in Australia. I can't imagine living without Cool Whip! :-)
Anonymous said…
Could you actually try chocolate cool whip or does it not work the same as the melted chocolate and cool whip mix?
Unknown said…
I had the same problem. I've tried it twice now and it just gets chunky!

Hi there! I found this on Pinterest as well and needed to try it! Unfortunately, I burned the chocolate chips I had on hand so I used 2 tbsp of PB2 and oh my gosh is this good! In case you've not heard of PB2 it's a powdered peanut butter that has 85% less fat calories than regular peanut butter and only 1g of sugar. I recommend to everyone!

I have a friend that LOVES 3 musketeers but hates milk chocolate. So I used bittersweet chocolate chips for the "filling" and dark cocoa candy wafers for the outside.
THEY WERE AWESOME!
